  • IN THE NEWS:
    Ecuador
is in debt to their Social Security fund.  Among other things,
Senior Ecuadorians are upset because presidente Gutierrez is pro
setting a liquor tax in order to accumulate funds to raise Social
Security income for the elderly to accommodate the rise in the cost of
living…  They believe that the funds should be taken from other
governmental sources and not by creating a new tax (after all, they’d
be paying that tax themselves, buying alcohol).  Several of the
elderly in Quito and Guayaquil are still sitting in a hunger strike
until the ongoing Social Security issue is resolved.

My opinion?  There’s a whole lot more going on than just the above
when it comes to the issues at stake, but I’m with the president.
    Set the liquor tax and
put the money into the Social Security fund … get the elderly their
    Social Security raise.
