  • Nariz del Diablo – Alausí
    From the official Alausi website:

    Nariz del Diablo
    Devil’s Nose

Nariz del Diablo  —   Puente Negro
    Devil’s Nose — Black Bridge

    FERROCARRIL
    – NARIZ DEL DIABLO .-
La obra de ingeniería vial mas
audaz que  haya  realizado  el hombre
en  la  Cordillera  de  los  Andes.
    Su  trayectoria zigzageante  desafía
    a   cada  instante  el  inminente

    Loose Translation:
    TRAIN – DEVIL’S NOSE — The
most audacious work of engineering that man has realized in the
Corridor of the Andes.  It’s zigzagging trajectory constantly
challenges imminent danger. It was the tomb of many Jamaican slaves who
were contracted expressly for dinamiting the mountain.

The train trip between Alausí and
Guayaquil is famous and tourists enjoy sitting atop the train rather
than inside it. Actually, aside from just being adventurous, it is
quite preferable to sit atop the train, as the smell inside – due to
heat, crowded bodies and various agricultural products as well as farm
animals – makes the ride inside a bit … noxious!
