    heart is heavy for
    Ecuador … the situation there right now is grim.  Political
    crisis.  Chaos reigns, and people are unhappy.  For a country
    of such beauty, with so much potential, and such open people,  it
    makes my soul ache to see so much frustration and anger, and I feel
    helpless, unable to do anything about it but watch and hope that
    somehow everything will once again pull together as it always has in
    the
    past.


    Tens of thousands of people (and I do not exaggerate) are marching in protest every day in cities
    throughout the country.  The presidential palace was surrounded by
    concertina wire this past week … armed guards throughout the country
    … the block around the Supreme Court was gated off and armed guards
    were set about to ensure rioting didn’t enter the court building…

    I’ve lived through many riots and government overthrows, military coups
    and public marches.  I’ve seen tanks rolling down the streets and
    watched the changing of the guards as one side “wins” over the other
    side and the old guard is taken away in a long line of handcuffed
    soldiers… I’ve seen mounted police and police in riot gear, and
    smelled the tear gas that burned my eyes… I’ve seen the bullet hole
    ridden palace walls (they patch them up and paint them over very
    quickly) … I’ve planned shopping expeditions that were canceled last
    minute due to political uprisings … I’ve had to find different routes
    home because of boulders and truckloads of dirt and burning tires
    blocking the streets during protests…

    But I’ve never seen things as bad as they are right now… and it saddens me greatly.
