  Una de las fiestas más particulares del Ecuador
  es la del Año Viejo. Además del ambiente
  de fiesta en unión con familiares y amigos, la
  noche del 31 está marcada por la elaboración
  de los típicos “años viejos”,
  muñecos de ropa vieja, rellenos de periódicos
  y aserrín, que representan satíricamente
  temas de carácter político del año
  que acaba.

  Muchos hombres se disfrazan de viudas del personaje que
  será quemado a la hora 0:00, luciendo graciosos
  ropajes en negro y pidiendo “limosna” para
  el muerto. La elaboración de los “testamentos”,
  que engloban una crítica a los males del año
  pasado y a las esperanzas y objetivos para el nuevo son
  escritos con gran humor e ingenio. Baile, comida y algunos
  rituales místicos están también presentes
  en el último día del año.

  One of the most unique festivals
  in Ecuador is that of the Old Year.  More than the festival
  atmosphere with family and friends, the night of the 31st is marked by
  elaborate homemade figures of the “Old Year” … mannequins dressed in old
  clothes, stuffed with newspapers and sawdust, that satirically represent
  themes of political characters and/or celebrities from the year that is ending.
  
  
  
  Many people masquerade as widows of
  the character that will be burned at midnight, wearing black and
  begging for alms for the dead.  The elaborate testaments, that
  encompass a critique of the evils of the year gone by and the hopes and
  objectives of the new year are written with great humor and
  ingenuity.  Dance, food, and some mystic ritual is also present on
  the last day of the year.
